actually it depends really on what client you are using. if you are using windows you should check out http://mirc.com/ and download mIRC. most windows users like to use mIRC because that's the only client they know about. when some windows users think of IRC (Internet Relay Chat) the program mIRC usually pops into their heads. you can share files using DCC (Direct Client to Client) which is probably built into your IRC client. if you search around http://google.com you will find many tutorials, mostly written for mIRC, that will give you tons on information on DCC.

IRC isn't for the weak at heart. most servers and networks are filled with spammers, crackers, and dangerous people. IRC is very basic, it doesn't allow you to change your fonts and it lacks many things that other chatting protocols have. the basic-isity (if that's a word) is what draws many people to it. you can connect to a IRC server using telnet! it doesn't really get any basic-er than that.

the best way to find more information on IRC is to search around by yourself. most people on IRC do not like to help others because the people asking for help aren't usually trying hard enough to help themselves. i suggest using the search engine that goes by the name of google. once you have experienced and harvested the power of google you will be able to find out anything and everything about anything that is archived by it's bot (GoogleBot).
